Job Overview

The Sustainability Agronomist will lead the design and implementation of sustainable farming practices across Olam’s pilot projects in Assab. The role involves conducting field research, analyzing agronomic data, and collaborating with local farmers to adopt climate‑smart techniques. By integrating modern science with traditional knowledge, the agronomist will help increase productivity, reduce environmental impact, and support the livelihoods of farming communities.

This position is central to Olam’s mission of delivering high‑quality, responsibly sourced agricultural products. The successful candidate will work closely with cross‑functional teams, including supply chain, research & development, and community outreach, to ensure that sustainability goals are met and aligned with broader corporate strategies. Key Responsibilities

• Develop and implement site‑specific sustainable agronomy plans for key crops cultivated in the Assab region.
• Conduct soil, water, and climate assessments to identify improvement opportunities.
• Train and mentor local farmers on integrated pest management, conservation agriculture, and precision farming techniques.
• Collect, analyze, and report agronomic data to support evidence‑based decision making.
• Collaborate with Olam’s R&D team to test and scale innovative seed varieties and input solutions.
• Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and Olam’s internal sustainability standards.
• Prepare technical reports and presentations for internal stakeholders and external partners.

Required Skills

• Strong knowledge of agronomic principles, soil science, and climate‑smart agriculture.
• Proficiency in data analysis tools such as Excel, R, or Python.
• Excellent communication and training skills, with fluency in English and preferably Arabic or Tigrinya.
• Ability to work independently in remote field conditions.
• Experience with stakeholder engagement and community development.
• Project management capabilities and attention to detail.

Education

A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Agronomy, Agricultural Science, Environmental Science, or a related discipline is required. Advanced degrees or certifications in sustainable agriculture are a plus.

Experience

Candidates should have 3‑5 years of hands‑on experience in agronomy, preferably within a commercial or development context. Prior work in the Horn of Africa or similar agro‑ecological zones is highly desirable.

Salary

The compensation package ranges from 150,000 to 250,000 SSP per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications. The package includes performance‑based incentives and benefits aligned with Olam’s global standards.
