Job Overview

This role is part of UNEP’s mission to strengthen environmental governance in Eritrea. The Environmental Compliance Officer will monitor and enforce adherence to environmental laws, conduct site assessments, and collaborate with stakeholders to promote sustainable practices. The position requires a blend of technical expertise and community engagement to advance environmental protection in Massawa’s coastal ecosystems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct environmental impact assessments for industrial and infrastructure projects
  • Monitor compliance with Eritrean environmental regulations and international standards
  • Develop and implement corrective action plans for non-compliant entities
  • Collaborate with local authorities, NGOs, and communities on sustainability initiatives
  • Prepare detailed reports and presentations for internal and external stakeholders
  • Conduct training sessions on environmental best practices for businesses and institutions

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in environmental legislation and regulatory frameworks
  • Strong analytical skills for data interpretation and risk assessment
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement abilities
  • Experience with GIS mapping and environmental monitoring tools
  • Fluency in English and Tigrinya
  • Ability to work independently in remote or challenging field conditions

Education

Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or related discipline. A Master’s Degree is a strong advantage.

Experience

3-5 years of experience in environmental compliance, preferably in coastal or marine ecosystems. Prior work with governmental or international organizations is preferred.

Salary

50,000 – 70,000 SSP per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
