Job Overview

This role is part of ILO’s global initiative to integrate climate adaptation strategies into urban development frameworks. The specialist will work directly with local governments and communities in Adi Quala to design and implement climate-resilient infrastructure projects. The position emphasizes cross-sector collaboration between environmental scientists, urban planners, and social workers to create adaptive solutions for coastal and arid regions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop climate adaptation strategies for urban infrastructure in coastal and arid regions
  • Conduct vulnerability assessments for urban ecosystems and population centers
  • Design and implement community-based climate resilience programs
  • Coordinate with municipal authorities to integrate climate considerations into urban planning
  • Monitor and evaluate the impact of climate adaptation projects
  • Prepare technical reports and policy recommendations for local governments

Required Skills

  • Expertise in climate modeling and urban heat island mitigation techniques
  • Proficiency in GIS mapping for urban climate risk assessment

  • Knowledge of international climate adaptation frameworks
  • Bilingual communication skills (English and Tigrinya preferred)
  • Experience with participatory community engagement methods

Education

  • Master’s Degree in Urban Planning, Environmental Science, or related field
  • Certification in Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) or Urban Sustainability

Experience

  • Proven experience in Eritrean or East African urban contexts

Salary

15,000 – 20,000 SSP per month, depending on experience and qualifications
