Job Description
Kerkebet Mining Share Company (KMSC) is developing the world-class Mier Gold Project in Eritrea and is seeking an experienced Senior Mining Engineer to provide technical leadership and Owner oversight of all mining components of this greenfield open pit gold operation, including pre‑stripping, waste dump, haul roads, ROM pad development and TSF construction material supply. This is a hands‑on leadership role in a fast‑tracked development, suited to someone who can work effectively under pressure and brings strong experience in schedule‑driven, complex mining and process plant projects.
About The Role
Based at Kerkebet Mine, you will lead mine planning, production scheduling and performance monitoring to ensure safe, efficient delivery of ore and waste in line with the approved mine plan and process plant commissioning and ramp‑up requirements. Reporting to the Project Manager and leading national mining engineers, you will act as the primary technical counterpart to the EPC Mining Contractor, ensuring pre‑stripping, haul roads, ROM pad development and TSF construction material supply are executed to required standards. You will work closely with geology, processing, TSF, project controls and HSE to maintain a single, coherent production plan that supports CIL plant throughput, grade and blend objectives. A key part of the role is building long‑term capability in the national mining team through day‑to‑day guidance, coaching and structured development.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide clear technical leadership for all mining matters, setting expectations for safety, productivity and compliance with the mine plan
- Lead the Owner’s mining oversight team and coordinate mining activities with TSF, access roads, ROM pad and other project work fronts
- Ensure mining operations comply with Eritrean mining legislation, KMSC HSE standards and site procedures, and actively participate in inspections, audits, toolbox talks and incident investigations
- Develop and maintain short‑ to medium‑term mine plans and production schedules consistent with the long‑term plan and CIL plant requirements
- Ensure sufficient ore is developed, exposed and stockpiled (tonnes, grade and ore types) to meet commissioning and ramp‑up needs
- Plan and coordinate supply of suitable waste rock for TSF embankment construction and other earthworks, meeting schedule, quantity and quality requirements
- Monitor EPC Mining Contractor performance against mine plans, KPIs and contractual targets, and lead technical discussions to address under‑performance
- Provide technical input to mining variations, claims, incentive payments and verification of quantities used for contractor progress claims
- Work closely with geology, survey and maintenance to ensure effective grade control, reconciliation, pit design implementation and equipment utilisation
- Support operational readiness and transition of mining activities from Project to Operations
Skills and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Mining Engineering
- Postgraduate qualification in Mine Planning, Business or Project Management advantageous
- Minimum 8–10 years’ relevant open pit mining experience, including several years in a senior mining or mine planning engineer role, preferably in gold or similar hard‑rock operations in developing countries, preferable Africa is highly regarded
- Demonstrated experience preparing short‑ to medium‑term mine plans, pit designs and production schedules that align with long‑term plans and budgets
- Strong knowledge of open pit mining methods, drill and blast engineering, haul road design, pit infrastructure and grade control, including ore loss and dilution management
- Experience monitoring production performance, reconciling plan versus actual, and implementing improvements to safety, productivity and cost
- Solid understanding of HSE requirements, geotechnical standards and statutory obligations for open pit operations, including slope stability, blasting and environmental performance
- Proficiency with mine planning software such as Surpac, Vulcan or Deswik, and strong analytical, modelling and problem‑solving skills
- Proven leadership and mentoring skills, with experience working in remote, multicultural environments; English language fluency is essential
