Job Description
Kerkebet Mining Share Company (KMSC) is developing the world-class Mier Gold Project in Eritrea and is seeking an experienced Senior Civil / Structural Engineer to lead civil, structural and TSF engineering for this greenfield gold development. This is a hands‑on leadership role in a fast‑tracked development, suited to someone who can work effectively under pressure and brings strong experience in schedule‑driven, complex mining and process plant projects.
About the Role
Based at Kerkebet Mine, you will provide specialist civil and structural engineering leadership across earthworks, foundations, concrete, structural steel, roads and drainage for the Mier Gold Project. You will take primary technical responsibility for Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) design and construction by EPC Contractor, ensuring compliance with dam safety, geotechnical and regulatory requirements. Reporting to the Project Manager and leading national civil/structural engineers, you will act as the main counterpart to the EPC Contractor’s civil/structural and TSF engineers, supporting safe, constructible and cost‑effective delivery of works. The role involves significant site presence, field verification and coordination with Engineering, Construction, Mining, HSE and Environmental teams in a remote project environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the civil/structural engineering function for the project, including TSF and site infrastructure, and mentor national civil/structural engineers
- Plan and prioritise civil/structural and TSF engineering tasks to meet long‑lead, critical path and construction schedule requirements
- Review and approve EPC Contractor civil/structural and TSF deliverables, including geotechnical reports, embankment designs, foundations, concrete and structural drawings and specifications
- Ensure civil/structural and TSF designs embed safety in design, including safe access, stability, working platforms, temporary works and working‑at‑height provisions
- Provide specialist oversight of TSF design and construction, covering embankment stability, seepage control, under‑drainage, beach development, spillways, decants and monitoring systems
- Participate in HAZOP/HAZID, TSF risk assessments and dam safety reviews, and ensure agreed actions are implemented and closed
- Monitor Contractor QA/QC programmes for civil and TSF works (compaction, concrete testing, survey, instrumentation installation, ITPs, NCR management) and support field resolution of issues
- Maintain civil/structural and TSF deliverables registers aligned with TSF and project milestones and coordinate with Project Controls to embed key milestones in the master schedule
- Provide technical input to civil/structural and TSF tender evaluations, variations and claims, and identify value engineering opportunities that maintain safety and compliance
- Support Environmental and Community teams in explaining TSF and civil design impacts and controls to regulators and local stakeholders
Skills and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Civil or Structural Engineering
- Chartered / Professional Engineer status or eligibility with a recognised professional body highly regarded
- Minimum 10 years’ relevant experience, including several years in senior civil/structural roles on mining, major earthworks or TSF projects in developing countries, preferable Africa is highly regarded
- Strong knowledge of civil and structural design for mining and industrial infrastructure, including earthworks, reinforced concrete, structural steel, roads, drainage and buried services
- Demonstrated experience with TSF design and construction, including embankment development, seepage and drainage systems, water management structures and construction quality surveillance
- Sound understanding of geotechnical concepts relevant to TSF and heavy civil works (settlement, slope stability, borrow materials, compaction and foundation preparation)
- Familiarity with dam safety guidelines, regulatory requirements, engineering codes and mining industry standards for civil, structural and TSF works
- Proven ability to manage interfaces between EPC contractors, Engineer of Record/independent reviewers, construction teams and owner representatives
- Strong technical review, problem‑solving, planning and communication skills, with a track record of mentoring and developing junior/national engineers
- Experience working in remote, multicultural project environments; English language fluency is essential
