Job Overview
The Geotechnical Data Scientist will join BHP’s Exploration & Data Analytics team in Barentu, playing a pivotal role in transforming raw geological and geotechnical data into actionable insights. This position supports the identification of mineral resources, risk assessment, and optimization of extraction strategies. The role involves close collaboration with geologists, engineers, and IT specialists to develop predictive models, visualizations, and dashboards that drive decision‑making. Key Responsibilities
- Collect, clean, and integrate geotechnical datasets from drilling, sampling, and sensor sources.
- Develop machine‑learning models to predict rock stability, mineral grade distribution, and extraction feasibility.
- Create interactive visualizations and GIS‑based dashboards for stakeholders.
- Collaborate with field engineers to validate model outputs against on‑site observations.
- Provide data‑driven recommendations for drilling plans, safety protocols, and resource estimation.
