Job Overview

ICOMOS seeks a Cultural Heritage Documentation Specialist to lead efforts in cataloging, digitizing, and preserving Eritrea’s cultural heritage. This role is critical in ensuring that historical sites, artifacts, and traditional knowledge are systematically recorded for future generations. The position is based in Tse’ega, a region with significant archaeological value.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct field surveys to document cultural heritage sites, including historical buildings, archaeological remains, and intangible heritage.
  • Develop digital archives using GIS, 3D modeling, and photogrammetry techniques.
  • Collaborate with local communities to record oral histories and traditional practices.
  • Prepare detailed reports and recommendations for heritage conservation projects.
  • Train local stakeholders in documentation methodologies and preservation best practices.

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in cultural heritage documentation software (e.g., ArcGIS, SketchUp, AutoCAD).
  • Experience in archaeological fieldwork and archival research.
  • Strong communication skills for engaging with local communities and international teams.
  • Knowledge of international heritage conservation standards (e.g., UNESCO, ICOMOS).
  • Fluency in English and Tigrinya; working knowledge of Italian or Arabic is an asset.

Education

Bachelor’s Degree in Archaeology, Cultural Heritage Management, Anthropology, or related field. A Master’s Degree is preferred.

Experience

Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in cultural heritage documentation, preferably in Sub-Saharan Africa. Fieldwork experience in remote or rural areas is essential.

Salary

12,000 – 18,000 Eritrean Nakfa (SSP) per month, commensurate with experience.
